Stress is an unavoidable aspect of everyday life. Every person suffers from one form of stress or another at some point in their lives. The word "stress" is often associated with bad feelings, depression and fatigue. What many are not aware of is that there are good forms of stress, as well as bad. Stress can make one more productive, or it can cause sleeplessness, irritability and anxiety.

Eustress is the kind of stress felt before a big event, after winning a trophy, or in anticipation of a big promotion. This type of stress never lasts long, but the effects of this type of stress are positive rather than negative. Eustress gives us strength when we need it most. Most people do not regard that anxious anticipation as a form of "stress", but that is exactly what it is. Eustress is a positive stress. It gives us strength, motivation and inspiration.

The most common form of stress is called acute stress. In moderation, this form of stress can be exciting. Many people feel this type of stress before an important event. However, too much of this stress can be exhausting. This stress is brought on by the pressure of everyday life, be it a report to do in a short time, or an exciting event just past. Too much of this type of stress can cause very discomforting symptoms, such as tension headaches, nausea, anxiety, irritability and depression. Most people can recognize these symptoms of stress by just taking the time to look at how hectic their life has been lately. This type of stress is easily manageable and usually results in no serious long-term affects.

Chronic stress is possibly the most dangerous type of stress, along with post-traumatic stress disorder. Chronic stress is also a common illness and is often crippling to the mind and body. Unlike acute stress, chronic stress is long lasting. This type of stress can continue affecting lives for weeks, months, even years. People suffering from chronic stress think negatively about almost everything. They often believe that disaster waits around every corner. Nothing good ever lasts very long and there seems to be no end in sight for the bad. Individuals suffering from chronic stress often lose hope and stop trying to find a solution for their problem.

Individuals suffering from chronic stress often learn to live with it. They get used to feeling horrible all the time. Chronic stress becomes almost comfortable and sometimes unnoticeable. Chronic stress, if not properly treated, can become fatal. Health risks caused from chronic stress include heart attack, stroke and maybe even cancer. Some people suffering from chronic stress resort to taking their own lives. Often, in order for the symptoms of chronic stress to be controlled, medical treatment is needed, as well as psychiatric treatment.

Sometimes stress can be decreased by making simple changes in our everyday lives. Other times, extensive psychotherapy is necessary to treat the symptoms. Set back some "alone time" to unwind. Read a book, listen to music, or just take some deep, soothing breaths every day. Many people have found that setting aside time for themselves has increased the overall quality of life. Try to get seven to nine hours of sleep each night to allow your body to recuperate after a busy day. Eat a healthy, balanced diet and be sure to get enough exercise. This will give you more energy and help heighten your mood. If you feel that changing your lifestyle will not suffice and that you need more help, talk to a health professional.

The meninges and the blood vessels do have pain perception. Headaches often result from traction to or irritation of the meninges and blood vessels. The muscles of the head may similarly be sensitive to pain.

Headache associated with specific symptoms may warrant urgent medical attention. Headaches are a common cause of suffering, but all headaches are not created equal. Migraine headaches are severe, recurrent headaches generally accompanied by other symptoms like visual disturbances or nausea. Cluster headaches occur daily over a period of weeks, sometimes months.Cluster headaches are the least common type of primary headaches, affecting about 0.4% of adult males in the United States and 0.08% of adult females.

Cyclic vomiting also occurs in young kids and involves repeated episodes of vomiting. Some patients describe the pain as feeling like a hot poker in the eye. Tension headaches typically result from tightening of the muscles of the face, neck, and scalp as a result of emotional stress. Tension headaches are caused by stress, muscular tension, vascular dilation, postural changes, protracted coughing or sneezing, and fever. Sinus headaches cause pain in the front of your head and face.Sinus headaches are associated with a swelling of the membranes lining the sinuses (spaces adjacent to the nasal passages). They are due to inflammation in the sinus passages that lie behind the cheeks, nose, and eyes. The pain tends to be worse when you bend forward and when you first wake up in the morning. Postnasal drip, sore throat, and nasal discharge usually occur with these headaches. Headaches associated with fever, convulsions, or accompanied by confusion or loss of consciousness; headaches following a blow to the head, or associated with pain in the eye or ear; persistent headache in a person with no previous history of headaches; and recurring headache in children.

Treatment of the headache depends on the type and severity of the headache and on other factors such as the age of the patient. Tension-type headaches can usually be soothed by using relaxation techniques, or using over-the-counter painkillers taken at the time of the headache. Codeine can be used with caution because of the increased chance of causing medicine overuse headache and addiction.Taking ibuprofen (an anti-inflammatory painkiller) is an alternative.

Anti-inflammatories may be more effective than paracetamol for some people.Taking a painkiller such as paracetamol usually works well to relieve a tension-type headache. Headaches that are caused by brain tumors, post-injury hematomas, dental problems, or disorders affecting the spinal disks usually require surgical treatment. Surgery may also be used to treat cases of idiopathic intracranial hypertension that do not respond to treatment with steroids. Psychotherapy may be helpful to patients with chronic headaches by interrupting the "feedback loop" between emotional upset and the physical symptoms of headaches. Some psychotherapists teach relaxation techniques, biofeedback, or other approaches to stress management as well as cognitive restructuring.

Cardiogenic Shock Treatment

The main goal for treatment of cardiogenic shock is reestablishing myocardial circulation, minimize heart muscle damage, and improve the pumping function of the heart. First-line treatment can utilize antishock trousers which compress the legs and shunt blood flow to the vital organs. Metallic PET film blankets can be used to reflect the patient's body heat to keep the patient warm (Wikipedia, 2008).

If a structural disorder is causing cardiogenic shock, they are repaired surgically. These may include septal rupture or dysfunction of the valves. Thrombosis of the coronary arteries is treated usually with angioplasty or stenting, coronary artery bypass grafting, or thrombolysis. Arrhythmias are treated medically or with cardioversion if indicated (Weil, 2007). Shock resulting from an acute myocardial infarction is usually treated with fluids if the CVP is low. If a pulmonary artery catheter is not in place, often small boluses of fluid (250 mL to 500 mL) are given to see if the patient's vital signs improve. This is done with care, while frequently auscultating the lungs and looking for signs and symptoms of fluid overload. Vasopressors may also be instituted to maintain adequate blood pressure (Weil, 2007).

For moderate hypotension, dopamine may be used for its inotropic effects to improve cardiac output and reduce left ventricular filling pressure, monitoring for possible arrhythmias that can result from the administration of this drug. Vasodilators may also be used to increase venous capacitance and lower systemic vascular resistance to reduce afterload on the damaged heart muscle (Weil, 2007).   For more serious hypotension, norepinephrine or dopamine may be utilized. Intraaortic balloon pumps may be helpful to temporarily reverse the effects of shock in patients with an acute myocardial infarction. This procedure is considered temporary as a bridge to cardiac catheterization and coronary angiography before surgical intervention can take place in patients with a myocardial infarction complicated by septal rupture or valvular dysfunction who require vasopressors for greater than 30 minutes (Weil, 2007). 

A left ventricular assist device may also be instituted to augment the pumping action of the heart (Wikipedia, 2008). In obstructive shock, therapy consists of removing the obstruction (Wikipedia, 2008). Pericardiocentesis can relieve the pressure on the heart from cardiac tamponade. Decompression of a tension pneumothorax should be immediately undertaken via catheter insertion or chest tube placement into the thorax. Pulmonary embolism is treated via thrombolysis or surgical embolectomy (Weil, 2007).
