Released in 2003 on Matador. Mogwai is a post rock band from Glasgow, Scottland. They formed in 1995. This is their 4th full length album. On Happy People, Mogwai opt for the mellower version of post rock. They have guitars and string sections that slowly build and blend and come to a light boil, but rarely erupt. They play this one a little closer to the chest and let the tension do the talking. That's not to say they don't cut loose ever. A few tracks on here have some epic guitar outburst, but those burst are few and far between and are fairly short lived. Vocals are also present on here, which is rather rare in the post rock biz, although they are garbled and filtered to the point were they aren't even words anymore. Happy People is an album full of melody and resonating, delicate harmonies. It doesn't follow the typical, loud / quiet dynamic, it really tries to blur the lines between cold and warmth, bleakness and light. Even though it has a sort of subdued vibe, the songs are very lush and cinematic. A lot of the instruments sound distant giving this album a wealth of depth. A pretty good album if you want to explore the calmer side of post rock. 3.7/5 Donations YWIR's Tip Jar yourewrongimright.webs.com
