Postmenopausal Ovarian Cysts - Common But Benign

If you know how ovarian cysts are formed, than you may wonder if you can get ovarian cysts post menopause. When past menopause, you no longer have eggs in your ovary so it may be surprising to know that the ovaries can still form cysts. In fact, it is interesting that these cysts are more common in those that have ceased menstruating than women who are pre-menopausal.

This information may cause some post-menopausal women to worry, however most of these cysts are found to be benign and have less problems than those of younger women. It has been shown in studies that often these cysts disappear rather quickly and a woman with them may not even know she had them.

While most cysts in post-menopausal women may not even be diagnosed or noticed by the patient, those that are should be referred to a doctor. This is because the incidence of cancer does increase with age. For this reason, your doctor should perform a sonogram as well as some blood tests to rule out a malignant or cancerous cyst. Sometimes women that have benign cysts still opt to have them removed due to either discomfort of fear of rupture.

Whether or not you are pre- or postmenopausal, most cysts can be easily managed with natural remedies and the help and attention of a doctor. Only in extreme cases will a hysterectomy or even surgery to remove the cyst be necessary. This statement becomes even more true as you age and cease menstruation, even though the occurrence of ovarian cysts can increase.
