While we work, our neck muscles may stiffen. Blood flow to the neck may become restricted. It can feel like all of the world's stress is on our shoulders.
Luckily, there are three simple tricks you can use to get instant relief for stiff neck pain. Each method takes only a few seconds, and they can be practiced practically anywhere, anytime!
1) Ice. It's part of basic first aid. Pain is often a sign of inflammation. When it's in pain, it's inflamed. Your body is sending lots of signals to an area that needs healing. Cooling the activity reduces inflammation, thereby relieving pain.
In a refrigerator or cooler at work, you can keep a gel-pack or other cold compress. A bag of frozen peas will nicely conform to body contours.
2) Move. Getting some kind of cardio exercise will give your muscles a big boost. Get up and move your body.
Moving will increase circulation, including more oxygen and blood-flow. Increasing blood-flow will refresh weary muscles. Moving will wake them up. It will relieve fatigue and reduce tension.
3) Activate postural muscles. Take a few moments to focus on the strength of upper-body muscles, especially those on your back-side.
Stimulate your upper and mid-back muscles. You can do resistance (strengthening) exercises with no equipment, or just minimal equipment like resistance tubing or hand-weights.
Here is one simple way to activate the middle-back muscles and relieve tension in your neck and upper-body: First, stand in a doorway, slightly in front of the door frame. Hold one arm out to your side like an L. Next, press your hand back into the door frame or adjacent wall. Do not bend at the wrist: keep it straight. Hold for 10-30 seconds, then relax and repeat with the other arm.
This is not a stretch! You want to activate muscles that are not working hard enough because they may be making the neck muscles work too hard. You should feel a good tension in your middle back, like the muscles are working.
These three natural relief methods are so simple, and so effective for instantly relieving neck pain, that you may wish to use them often to keep tension away and prevent injury.
